Finding a Threatened Ecosystem


The National List of Threatened Ecosystems for South Africa was gazetted on 9 December 2011. The list provides a register of all the threatened ecosystems (critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable) in South Africa. The shapefile for the original extent of threatened ecosystems is available for download from the BGIS website.

To download the shapefiles:

  1. Go to the BGIS map overview page of the National List of Threatened Terrestrial Ecosystems for South Africa (2011) – search.
  2. On the right-hand side is a spatial dataset section with links to download the shapefile for the original extent of the threatened ecosystems as well as the metadata. Click on the link
